Positioning and Turning Over
Positioning and Turning Over
Proper positioning is just as important as technique when it comes to comfort and effectiveness. Everyone’s body is different, and not all clients can comfortably lie flat on a massage table in prone (on the stomach) or supine (on the back) positions.
- Support the body – Use cushions, bolsters, or rolled towels to relieve pressure on joints, the lower back, or the pelvis. Even small adjustments can make a huge difference in comfort.
- Sensitive areas – Take extra care when working around the chest, abdomen, groin, and buttocks. Draping and strategic positioning help protect privacy while allowing access to muscles that need attention.
- Guide turns safely – When moving a partner from prone to supine (or vice versa), move slowly and communicate clearly. Ask if they need help, and respect their preferred method of rolling or turning.
- Observe posture and alignment – Note if the neck, shoulders, or hips are uncomfortable in certain positions and adjust with cushions or alternative setups. Supporting natural posture helps prevent strain and promotes relaxation.
Mastering positioning and safe turning builds confidence in giving a massage while ensuring the recipient feels cared for and respected from start to finish.
